While people all over the world counted down to the new year hours ago and the largest firework display in Dubai was definitely over, the pilot announced it’s 2014 to his passengers as we crossed the International Date Line somewhere over the Pacific Ocean.
It seemed weird. Until then, it was just an ordinary day/night whatever time zone we happened to be in. Suddenly its a new year and all the thoughts of fresh starts and new beginnings fluttered in the cabin above me.
I looked around. Most of the people were sleeping with in-flight screens glowing and flashing at the frozen faces as the movies continued despite the slumber. I had hoped for a flash mob or something exciting. But nothing of that sort happened. Its just another flight from somewhere to somewhere else, another day’s work for the crew, another load of travellers, another plane in the sky.
Must be still new year’s eve in Seattle, the eleventh hour and I was determined not to lose the countdown. Thank goodness Delta screens old movies and I found one appropriate for the occasion – New Year’s Eve.
Never mind if its 2011/12, a silly sentimental romantic comedy with a string of stars like Halle Berry, Jon Bon Jovi, Robert De Niro, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sofia Vergara and others.
The movie as expected was sugar-coated with too-good-to-be-true situations like cool guy stuck in an elevator with pretty girl; mum finding teenage daughter in Times Square in a crowd of millions, and handsome rich bachelor waiting for a promised date, a beauty he didn’t even know her name, who actually arrived in a horse-drawn carriage just as he was giving up. Yes, only in Hollywood I know.
Though we know that in real life we don’t come close to how things worked out on screen, we continue to be taken away for the couple of hours of make-believe to a place where the unlikely is possible.
And as the show ended with the time ball dropping at midnight, it wrapped up with a nice reminder about Love and Hope, and perhaps, the unlikely will be possible for us.
Sometimes it feels like there’re so many things in this world we can’t control
– earthquakes, floods, reality shows
But it’s important to remember the things that we can, like
forgiveness, second chances, fresh starts.
Because the one thing
that turns the world from a lonely place to a beautiful place is love.
Love in any of its forms
Love gives us hope
Hope for the New Year.
Have a great year ahead!
